Why HWFP works as a substrate supplement
Hardwood fuel pellets are made by compressing kiln-dried hardwood sawdust under high pressure. The heat and pressure of extrusion is what binds them — no glue, no wax, no binding agent is added. When you rehydrate a pellet it collapses straight back into fine hardwood sawdust, which is exactly the material you want for wood-loving species.
The pelleting process also effectively sterilises the material, and the sealed bags keep it dry and contaminant-free until you open them. Compared to sourcing loose hardwood sawdust, pellets are cleaner, easier to store, consistent bag to bag, and dramatically cheaper by volume once hydrated.
Hydration ratio
The common starting point is 1:1 by weight — one part pellets to one part water. A 15kg bag of pellets plus 15 litres of water yields roughly 30kg of hydrated hardwood sawdust at approximately field capacity.
Many growers run a “half-and-half” bulk substrate: equal parts hydrated HWFP and hydrated soy hull pellets, which gives the nitrogen boost that hardwood alone lacks. Others blend HWFP with coir and vermiculite. Your ratio will depend on species, container, and whether you are pasteurising or sterilising — test on a small batch before committing a tonne.

Why buy a tonne rather than bags
Retail hardwood pellets from garden centres and online marketplaces typically run £8–14 per 15kg bag, which works out to £530–930 per tonne before delivery — and delivery on small quantities is where the cost really lands. At £700 per tonne delivered, a single pallet removes the per-bag markup and the repeat carriage charges entirely.
For a farm running continuous fruiting cycles, one pallet is a meaningful buffer against supply interruption — and hardwood pellets keep indefinitely if the bags stay sealed and dry.
Storage
Keep the pallet under cover and off the ground. Sealed bags are weather-resistant but not waterproof, and any pellet that takes on moisture will swell and break down prematurely. Stored dry, there is no meaningful shelf life limit.
