Hardwood vs Softwood Pellets: Which Should You Buy?

The short version: softwood is cheaper per tonne, hardwood gives you more energy per pellet and burns longer. Which one wins depends entirely on what you are doing with it — and for two of the three main uses, the answer is not close.

The core difference

Density. Hardwood species like oak and beech are physically denser than pine and spruce, so a hardwood pellet of the same dimensions carries more wood in it. More wood means more stored energy and a longer burn from the same volume.

The counter-argument is cost. The overwhelming majority of UK heating pellets are softwood, made from sawmill residue left over from construction timber. That residue is abundant and cheap, and the pellets are priced accordingly. Hardwood is a smaller, more specialised supply chain and costs more per tonne.

For biomass heating: it depends

This is the only application where softwood is a serious contender, and often the better buy.

If your only metric is pence per kilowatt hour, softwood usually wins — the price gap is generally wider than the energy gap. Hardwood earns its premium on the practical side: fewer refills for the same heat output, and with clean bark-free material, less ash to clear.

Critically, check your appliance first. Many boilers and stoves are specified for ENplus A1 softwood and are designed around softwood ash behaviour. Running hardwood outside the stated fuel specification can affect performance and may affect your warranty. Read the manual or ask your installer before you switch. For BBQ and smoking: hardwood only

Not a preference — a rule. Softwood contains resins and terpenes that produce a harsh, acrid, chemically-tasting smoke. It will ruin food and can deposit sticky creosote in your smoker.

For mushroom substrate: hardwood only

Also not a preference. The wood-loving species grown commercially — oyster, lion’s mane, shiitake, reishi — are hardwood decomposers. They evolved on broadleaf trees and lack the enzymes to break down softwood efficiently.

Worse, softwood resins are actively antifungal. Using softwood pellets for substrate gives poor colonisation at best and complete failure at worst. Full detail on our substrate guide.

What about bark and binders?

A more important question than species, and one most suppliers do not answer.

Bark raises ash content sharply and produces dirtier smoke. Binders and glues — used by some manufacturers to hold poor-quality material together — burn badly and have no place near food or substrate. A properly made pellet needs neither: the heat and pressure of extrusion releases lignin in the wood, which binds it naturally.
